414loral is Creating Handcrafted and Heartfelt Happiness Through Bouquets
While an undergrad at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Mikel McGee decided to take a one-credit floral design class. She had no clue that she’d be inspired so much from that class to turn what she learned into a business.
McGee spent a lot of time working with her professor Wendy who is the owner of Flowers by Jan, located at 3036 S. 13th St. By actually working in a flower shop and with someone who’s been doing it for years, McGee saw how much time goes into creating and selling flo.
“I think a lot of people underestimate the time that goes into it,” McGee said.

According to McGee, during holidays like Valentine’s Day, she would go into to help Wendy around 6 a.m. and didn’t get off until around 8 or 9 p.m. That work included cutting long flower stems, picking up heavy vases and standing on one’s feet for most of the day.
Although McGee no longer works with Wendy, she thinks of Wendy from time to time and considers her as her greatest inspiration.
McGee has moved on from just making florals for friends and family to starting her own business: 414loral.
“I started 414loral with the encouragement and prodding of my close friends and family. I love flowers and floral design, but it was really always a “Just for Fun” thing,” McGee wrote in a Facebook post. “My soul food comes in the form of creating beautiful bouquets for my community. I love when folks feel cherished and adored- there’s something truly dreamy about this!”

414loral has officially been around since Nov. 2019 and since then, she’s made 100s of bouquets. McGee sold out at both pop-up shows she participated in and plans on being a part of more this year. Along with providing already made bouquets at those events, she brings loose flowers to make bouquets on the spot.
The flowers for the bouquets used to come from grocery stores such as Trader Joe’s or Metro Market. But, now she’s moved on to wholesales at Kennicott.
“I call it candy Cott [because] even if you don’t need [something] you’re like ‘oooh, I want to work with that flower,” she said.
414loral also offers subscription services on a weekly, bi-weekly and monthly basis. And McGee hand delivers them herself. McGee focuses on making her arrangements accessible and affordable.
On most occasions, people usually buy flowers for others, but McGee said it’s nothing wrong with getting some for yourself.
“Treat yourself,” said McGee.
414loral pushes the message that you can’t “buy happiness, but at 414loral happiness is handcrafted.”
“I’m loving it,” McGee said about crafting bouquets. “I want to continue to make people smile.”
