If you know mothers, you know how hard they’ll go for their kids. But according to Olivia Toliver, her son is the GOAT: greatest of all time. That’s how she came up with the first line for her newly established baby business, Omari’s Closet.

“My kid is really inspiring me for the Baby GOAT [collection]. He did something, and I just thought, 'wow, you’re the GOAT.’ And [it became] you're the baby GOAT. I really liked that. It just kind of stuck,” Toliver said.

Toliver became a new mom in January of 2020 during the pandemic. The 25-year-old Milwaukee native moved to Atlanta, GA, after receiving her bachelor’s degree to pursue a teaching program that was canceled because of COVID-19. She became inspired to start the clothing business after spending so much time with her son and being surrounded by all of his clothes.

“You can always find stuff for girls, but I feel like boys [clothes] are kind of like the same. There are dinosaurs and trucks and things like that, so… it came out of creativity and originality. Because I wanted something different than the standard boys’ outfit when you go to the store,” Toliver said.

The Baby GOAT collection hat is available for purchase along with personalized pacifiers, teething rings, and other baby gear on the website. But Toliver plans to expand the line into other clothing items like shirts, joggers and bucket hats. She also sees the business expanding into different ways to make a positive impact, including a children’s book specifically for Black kids.

Having a newborn can be very challenging, and a pandemic can exacerbate the impact. Yet, Toliver said she has enjoyed being able to spend so much time with her son while he’s still so young.

“Everything has been a blessing in disguise. All the months that I was off of work, I got to see my child. And we’ve really bonded, and I feel like that's really been beneficial to our relationship so far,” she said. “Everyone's like you are connected at the hip, but I'm really taking it as a blessing because your child is only going to be this small for so long. So I'm embracing the time that we have right now.”
