Encouraging Words from Wisconsin Elected Officials: Congresswoman Moore, Ald. Coggs and Ald. Johnson
It seems like it’s our 100th day on stay-at-home order and we’re running out of things to do. But, even with an extreme desire to go out, Wisconsin elected officials don’t won’t you to lose hope. Congresswoman Gwen Moore, Alderwoman Milele Coggs and Alderman Cavalier Johnson share a few encouraging words to keep the people’s spirits high.
Stay-at-home order hasn’t slowed down Moore’s work schedule. Every day is filled with Zoom meetings and phone calls, mainly surrounded around the topic of COVID-19 and being a resource to the people.
“We’re working really hard to make sure we get resources and money to people,” Moore said.
Through the IRS, people around the country have already started to receive their stimulus checks, but more resources are needed.
Moore and others want to expand the definition of who’s considered unemployed to include individuals who aren’t usually consider like hairstylists and restaurant workers.
Both Coggs and Johnson have little ones at home that they’ve been taking care of while keeping up with their work duties.
Coggs has two little ones that she’s been homeschooling, which she describes as a challenge but doable. She wants people to enjoy the time they’ve been given with their loved ones, despite everything that’s going on.
“I hope that people take this time that they have to kind of reflect on their own lives,” Coggs said. “Find the benefit of the time they have now.”
Balancing work with a 4th grader and two small twins all day is the new life of Johnson. Johnson credits and appreciates his wife for taking care of the kids while he would go to work. Usually he’d be out of the house by 6:30 a.m., now he gets to see his kids a lot more, which he loves.
When it comes to the virus and stopping it, Johnson encourages people to stay at home.
“To the extent that you can, stay at home,” Johnson said. “Stay away from the virus.”
He also suggest applying for unemployment if needed and to not be ashamed.
