Niqua's Tutoring is Here to Help Milwaukee Youth Learn
All it takes is some love, care and attention paid to help our youth thrive. Community member Shaniqua Jones is providing all three of those things plus education through her tutoring service. On Oct. 21, 2020, Jones began her “Niqua’s Tutoring” to not only help youth succeed educationally, but also help them succeed in their everyday lives.
Jones offers free tutoring for K5-12th graders, Monday-Thursday from 4pm-8pm. Her goal is to meet each student where they’re at and help them where necessary.
“I’m willing to figure it out with you,” said Jones. “I want to build relationships.”

With so many kids being bullied, Jones uses her tutoring services as a safe place for kids to confine in while learning. According to Jones, our youth feel insecure and lack self-love, so she’s teaching her youth the meaning of self-love.
The distractions of life can stop our youth from seeing what life has to offer, she said.
“Self-love is everything,” said Jones. “If I can make a kid a believer, I will.”
“I want them to feel confident.”
According to USA Today, Milwaukee is the worst city in America for Black people. The average Black household only earns $29,928. And on top of that, 1,020 in every 100,000 Black residents die every year. Honestly, these are scary numbers that have real truth behind them, but what they don’t show are the many youth who are striving to do better. The youth who are succeeding despite their circumstances. And the youth waiting for someone to see potential in them.

Jones has a history of working with children because she’s spent six years working at a children’s center. Eventually Jones wants to start a non-profit that mainly focuses on young women—something like a big sister’s club. At a point in time, Jones lost herself and can now use that life experience to help young women.
“I feel like a lot of younger women can listen to me,” she said. “I’m going to be a blessing to someone else. Her nonprofit would also mentor both females and males. According to Jones, she has more patience for kids than other adults.

After getting in an accident, Jones took a break from her job at a funeral home, which lead her to Niqua’s Tutoring. Jones said she’s learned so much over the years that it only feels right to spread her knowledge with others, especially the youth.
“Send the kids my way,” she said. “I’m here.”
“You’d be surprised at how many people care.”
