Black Restaurant Week in Atlanta Ends August 14, Here's a Restaurant Spotlight: Superior Vegan

Black Restaurant Week in Atlanta has made its return for the fifth year in the row. Every year the week is dedicated to celebrating African American, African, and Caribbean’s impact in the food industry. This year’s celebration started on August 5, 2022 and ends August 14, 2022.
The “holiday” was originally started in 2016 by Warren Luckett, Falayn Ferrell, and Derek Robinson in Houston. Now, Black Restaurant Week is national and is being celebrated in places like Milwaukee, New York, and Washington D.C.
According to Thrillist, Ferrell said that more than 90,000 restaurants and bars closed nationwide since 2020, so it’s important they created a platform that brings awareness to Black-owned restaurants outside of their food tour.
Superior Vegan is one of this year’s participating Atlanta restaurants. The food truck started off as a catering business owned by Sandra Williams and her husband Robert Williams. According to Sandra, Robert has blessed taste buds so she had to share her husband’s food with the world.
The catering business started in 2012 with plans to eventually open a brick and mortar but that changed once COVID hit. The next best step was getting a food truck, which Sandra said hasn’t really felt the impacts of the pandemic because they are able to change their locations daily.
Superior Vegan serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner that includes scrambled tofu, beet burgers, and tacos.
Robert said the point of food is to “eat to live, not live to eat.”
Sandra encourages people to do their research before knocking vegan food. She said there are many options out there, but they are not all the same.
“We’re in it for the life of people,” said Sandra.
