Johnson started as a Zumba instructor for years in Huntsville, Alabama. Through her work experience, she knew her influence included more than fitness training. Johnson said a candid conversation with an exercising client revealed that women in caretaker roles often forget about themselves.

“I wanted to help other women grow and walk in their power,” Johnson said. “Regular exercise helps lower the chance of heart disease and improves your mental health and mood tremendously,” Johnson said. “I can provide instruction for all of your fitness needs in a fun and engaging way.”

In April 2015, Johnson came up with Genesys Fitness, a fitness program that is customized with life training, motivation, and fitness.  She named her new motivational business Genesys Fitness because it signified a rebirth for the often “forgotten” woman: the divorce’, caretaker, and empty-nester. Johnson believes that helping women rediscover who they are after suffering a loss will empower them to become their ideal selves – physically, mentally, and emotionally.

That same year, Johnson received help from her Delta Sigma Theta Sorority sister with the company’s development. She posted on social media her objectives and many women answered, wanting to transform their lives.

“A lot of people wanted to be rebirthed,” Johnson said. “These women wanted to grow in different phases of their lives. They wanted to create the best life for themselves. My clients had to think, ‘Is this who I want to be?’ and then figure out their new journey.”

Genesys Fitness (GenFit) is a community of women who recognize the need to reclaim their lives and are emotionally ready to do the work. Johnson works as motivational life coach, fitness trainer, and “girlfriend of authority.” For Johnson, being a girlfriend of authority means to be that person her clients can trust.

“At GenFit, self-care takes priority over caring for others because it is in caring for ourselves that we make the best caregivers,” she said.

Johnson said that she focuses on the total person instead of the physical weight. Through this mindset, she can help her clients shed the emotional and physical weight that they’ve been carrying.

“It’s going to take baby steps to walk into your purpose,” Johnson said. “It takes a while to realize your light. It takes a lot to detox that negative spirit out of you, but it’s worth it.”
