In November 2022, Three Keys Coffee: a Black and family-owned coffee brand based in Houston, Texas, moved into a 1,800 sq. ft. location to expand operations. By the time of this interview, owners Tio and Kenzel Fallen were happy to announce a recent distribution deal with Amazon through an accelerator program. This partnership will make their coffee available to customers across the country, bringing their unique blend of quality and community impact to a wider audience.
“Coffee is a shared experienced,” said Tio.
Their new space provides them the opportunity to appear on Google maps, set their own hours, and utilize the space how they see fit. Kenzel said they average around 1,000 lbs of roasted coffee per week. Along with the move, the couple has upgraded from one roaster to two.
Tio roasts most of the coffee and will be competing in a national competition making him one of few Black individuals, if not the only, to make it this far in a roasting competition.
“We have our own coffee. Our own identity,” said Tio.
Three Keys Coffee has gained a loyal following in Houston and beyond, thanks in part to their commitment to quality and their dedication to their community. The company was named one of Houston's Best Black-Owned Businesses by Houstonia Magazine in 2020.
The brand goes beyond just providing high-quality coffee, as they also pair each of their coffee blends with a curated music playlist. The company is founded and run by music lovers, with a particular passion for jazz, and they believe that music has the power to enhance the coffee-drinking experience.
Kenzel said they are providing a “multi-sensory experience."
