Secure Bridges is Giving a Small Piece of Safety to Kids Through Secure Kits Containing Hygiene and School Supplies
Secure Kits will be disbursed during the weekends of August.
Starting next month, Secure Bridges—a non-profit dedicated to ending the local sex trade of children in the Milwaukee area—will begin distributing their Secure Kits, which are filled with hygiene products and school supplies for the upcoming school year. Since the school year will be online and with many back-to-school events being canceled, Secure Bridges wants to provide the basic necessities to our students.
“Kids can’t focus at school when their basic needs aren’t met,” said Secure Bridges Founder Shayvon McCullum. “The Secure Kits is a small piece of safety for our kids.”
Included in the Secure Kits will be deodorant, soap, toothpaste, pencils, paper and other essential necessities.
McCullum has the goal of donating Secure Kits to 100 children. She’s already started a registry with 22 youth who expressed their need for a Secure Kit. So far, she has received one monetary donation to put towards Secure Kits but is looking for more donations.
Young Enterprising Society are donating masks for the kits yet school supplies, such as crayons, calculators and notebooks are still needed.

Along with the 22 youth who signed up for the kits, McCullum will be visiting different neighbors to drop-off the kits on people’s porches. The drop-offs will start on August 1, 2020 and take place every Saturday and Sunday of August, expect August 8. McCullum plans on visiting areas such as 21st, 22nd and 23rd St. of Center St. and 14th, 15th and 16th St. of North Ave. McCullum is looking for volunteers to help with drop-offs.

“This is my way to give back to our kids who can’t be reached,” said McCullum. “Everything we do is to support the better wellbeing of our children.”
As a parent herself, McCullum understands the fears and uncertainty parents have about this year’s school year. She’s hoping schools will have a clearer plan on how everything will run.
Along with providing resources for our students, McCullum suggested that schools have something to help parents teach their kids from at home.
McCullum suggest teachers create a “resource sheet” for parents that will have key notes and advice on how to teach certain topics. The sheet would include answers, so the parent can know what to expect as an outcome of their child’s work. She also would like to be sent reading resources to stay up-to-times with the new teaching methods.
“Not every parent is literate enough. We need resources for those parents,” she said.
