"Think Like A DJ" is A 7-Step Book to Help Individuals Go from Poverty to Prosperity

“Think Like A DJ” was released on August 14, 2020.

After spending 13 years in the DJing industry, Martinez White understands the ends and out of creating a vibe for any occasion. White has taken that same mindset and applied to his life, and now he’s helping others through his first book, “Think Like A DJ: 7 Steps To Spin Poverty Into Prosperity”. It’s a self-guidebook to help individuals reach their full potential.

In the book, White poses the question: “If your life were a party, how many would RSVP?” He wants his readers to think about their lives and what impact they’re making, and if it’s the impact that they want to make.

According to White, life is like being a DJ because you’re in control and it all starts in the mind. Through this self-guide book, White is providing information on how to hone one’s skills, ideas and knowledge into sustainable income.

“I’m here to teach you,” said White. “I can educate you, but you gotta pick a tempo.” Just like any good party, you have to find a vibe that fits it and the same goes for your life, said White.

Think Like a DJ was created in a two-year span and includes forwards from Reggie Brown and David Muhammad. Brown is a well-known Milwaukee DJ who interned with White’s late father O.C. White. Through the process of creating this book, White learned a lot about his father who he had lost at the age of three years old. According to Brown, O.C. helped with the popularity of midwest music. It brought tears to White’s eyes to hear about the great things his father accomplished and all the people he influenced, including Brown.

“[Reggie] explained that no matter how successful my dad was, he taught Reggie best practices around how to treat the common man. He was a celebrity who had empathy for anyone who needed it from him,” White said. “That all impacted me deeply. To have grown up in poverty and thinking my dad had that much influence and impact.”

White officially released his book on his 31st birthday, August 14, 2020, but has been taking pre-orders for a couple of weeks. So far, White has sold 100 copies, but has a goal of selling 10,000 with his “10K Challenge”.

“I want to speak to more kids and get the book in the hands of as many Black kids as possible,” said White. He also wants LGBTQ+ kids and women leaders to have access to his book.

As a Black male from 15th and Keefe, White hopes to inspire Milwaukee’s youth to never give up on themselves. He comes from a single-parent home with five siblings. At just age 16, White was attending college at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. At age 20, White earned his Bachelor of Arts in Communication Arts and Afro-American Studies.

“Kids need to have this in their back pocket,” White said about his book. “I want to give them something they can latch onto.”
