After working 10 years in Milwaukee’s childcare industry, Kelly Melton has self-published her first children’s book “Did You Say Baby?” The book was released on March 18, 2021, during her book signing event held where Melton signed and sold over 200 books.

The goal of the book is to empower and encourage parents to have more conversations with their kids, even when they may be difficult.

“Did You Say Baby?” follows six-year-old Raylan’s emotions as he prepares for his new sibling to arrive. Raylan is an only child who fears the new baby will alter his relationship with his parents. Through conversation, the main character eventually accepts the change and loves being a big brother to his sister.

“Effective communication is key,” said Melton. “If we learn how to talk to our children at an early then they will be more comfortable talking to us teenagers.”

Melton went all out for her book signing event, which was also the five-year celebration of her business The Itsy Bitsy Scholars Childcare Center. She cares for children ages six weeks to 12 years old, so she made sure her event was one a kid would enjoy. She had a DJ that played solely kids and gospel music. There was also a bounce house, a basketball hoop, a coloring station, and face painting, along with food.

For Melton, her book is a guide to having important conversations with children. She said often sometimes parents don’t always believe or pay attention to what’s affecting their children.

“I am for the community. If I have the resources, I feel free to share anything,” she said. “I’m here for families and children.”
