The joint program between the Milwaukee Bucks and Hennessy, Invest Black MKE, is carrying on its mission of supporting Black-owned businesses by selecting a new set of recipients. These Milwaukee businesses were given grants and featured in a video showcasing their services.
Carvd N Stone, Ambition Center, Turning Tables Tavern, SPINN MKE, and Embody Yoga are the Invest Black MKE 2023 recipients chosen by the Bucks with support from Invest Black MKE & Hennessy executives.
Each business was invited to a Bucks game where they enjoyed a private suite, delicious food, and floor seats to watch the players warm up. Recipients also received game tickets and were invited onto the court to view videos made by the Bucks about their businesses. These commercials were broadcast on the jumbotron at the game and on TV for at-home viewers. Lastly, the businesses received personalized jerseys, with CNS receiving its second Bucks jersey.
“I will forever be grateful for the support of the Bucks over the years. As the first sponsor of Carvd N Stone they continue to support us through funding and resources, so thank you,” said CNS Founder Nyesha Stone.
Ambition Center Owner Marcell Jackson just celebrated 18 months of business. The center was the only Black-owned co-working space to open in 2021 and this still holds for 2022.
“If we can do it, they can do it,” said Jackson. “Your business is not so far out of reach.”
Turning Tables Tavern owned by Emerald Mills is a restaurant and space for up-and-coming chefs, specifically Black, to collaborate on the restaurant’s constantly changing menu. Mills is on a mission to build up and support the next generation of Black chefs.
“The Bucks players and its organization have been extremely supportive of our journey. [They] have hosted events in our space, and we were also recipients of the Jrue and Lauren Holiday Fund,” said Mills.
It’s about health and wellness for innovator Dr. Shakkiah Curtis. She opened Spinn MKE to create a space for Black people to come and work out, where they feel at home. Spinn MKE is a lifestyle fitness brand that’s revolved around culture and community.
“You can’t be great if you don’t take the space to create something for yourself,” said Curtis.
Embody Yoga could not be reached in time for the article.
